Jewish Museum

I did my work experience at the Jewish Museum Berlin. As I have always been interested in the history of people, the museum was an ideal work placement for me.The museum is one of the most successful museums in Germany. It opened in September 2001 and it has had more than 3 million visitors since then. Every third visitor is a foreigner. What I did not know ist, that 40 % of all visitors just go there because of the building's architecture (the museum consists of an old building which was previously the "Berlin Museum" and the new buildidng, designed by architect Daniel Libeskind).
I got the chance to be in a lot of different departments. What I liked most was the marketing department and the visitor service with its 250 so-called "hosts".
At 8: 45 am there was a briefing where the hosts were divided amongst the different departments.
The most important part is the "INFO COUNTER", which is in the lobby next to the entrance. I was once in charge of this counter and had to show the visitors the way through the exhibitions (there are permanent exhibitions and special ones). Visitors get a small map because the way through the museum is confusing.
Working there helped me get an insight into what a typical working day of a museum assistant is like. I was even allowed to take part in job interviews for a new security company; but celebrating the birthday of W.M. Blumenthal (the director of the museum), was without a doubt one of the highlights of my stay. (Elisabeth Arf, 9c)
